Marie is the mother of a successful university student who at 7 years old was diagnosed as having attention deficit (AD) issues.
"When my son was 7 years old, his teachers were telling us that his focus in class was tenuous at best, that his mind was wandering. Both his psychologist and his Montesory School recommended Master Lee's school. The effect of Taekwondo was precisely what we wanted, our son's ability to focus dramatically improved. Furthermore, the physical fitness benefits for our son were tremendous, given that there are limited options for youth who are not especially gifted athletically. That was 10 years ago, he is now at Queen's University and doing very well."
As a parent, Marie and her husband have benefited as well.
"My husband and I brought our son to class for the first 6 months. Our son, and all the other students were having so much fun, we decided to join them. The 3 of us remain to this day, fully engaged in this art.
As a 56 year old woman, Marie has seen the many benefits that Grandmaster Lee's teachings have brought her.
"Physically, Taekwondo is an excellent, well rounded fitness activity and at 56 I am confident that my fitness level is considerably better than most women my age. Mentally, Taekwondo requires a lot of memory work, it strengthens and sharpens your ability to remember complex concepts, which is especially relevant to women as they enter menopause."
A little over five years ago, Marie leaned that she was suffering from Parkinson's disease, a devastating diagnosis for anyone.
When I was diagnosed, I realized that the most valuable aspect of my training was Spiritual strength. The support I received from Grandmaster Lee and other students was sterling.....not only was I wanted, despite my disability, I was encouraged to continue training and to further progress and test for my 2nd DAN. Grandmaster Lee has given me the ability to overcome my emotional devastation through his unfailingly positive support, and I know, that if it were not for his teachings I would not be able to walk today."
As a woman, Marie greatly appreciates the self-defense training she has received.
"Every woman, beginning as early as age 7, should be taught how to defend themselves. Personally, I have the knowledge and confidence not to become a victim and the ability to defend myself and others if required."
Marie finds Grandmaster Lee's school very welcoming to women.
"Women are treated with respect at the school, yet we are challenged up to and beyond our abilities, developing greater skills than we may have thought possible.
